Eight Month-Old Eating Machine

Our "little buddy" turned eight months old today, and he is doing so many new things!
  • Reid officially cut his first tooth around 7.5 months; this was very quickly followed by his second tooth less than a week later
  • He can stand without holding onto anything for short periods of time, and he continues to walk with his walker, crawl, and pull up on everything in sight
  • Reid is definitely a climber! Today he crawled over to a box by a window and next thing I knew, he was standing on top of it. Heaven help us!
  • He continues to babble constantly, but he has also started to make what I call his "commenting noise"; he looks at something and makes a noise that either sounds like "dees" or "doh"; this is frequently followed by turning to make sure we're acknowledging him and whatever he is talking about
One of the biggest changes we've noticed in Reid recently is his appetite for solid food. He is eating a wide variety of foods in a wide variety of textures. I'm having tons of fun creating new concoctions for him each day, and I think I may do a future blog post devoted to baby food-making. The foods that Reid is now eating:
  • Veggies: sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, butternut squash, acorn squash, green beans, peas, yellow squash
  • Fruits: apples, pears, blueberries, avocados, bananas, mango, peaches, pears, plums, prunes
  • Other: monterey jack and cheddar cheese, yogurt, scrambled egg yolk, rotini pasta, oatmeal, rice cereal, chicken, puffs, Cheerios
Reid is very into finger feeding; he has been feeding himself pieces of diced, cooked fruits and veggies (sweet potatoes, peas and apples are favorites), and pieces of cheese, pasta, puffs and cereal. He also grabs the spoon out of my hand frequently and tries to feed himself (with some success!). He drinks water out of a sippy cup with each meal, too. Have I mentioned that I cannot believe how grown-up he's getting?!

I feel like this one-sided dimple is new. At least it's getting much more pronounced, don't you think?

Moving right along...

Well, my worst nightmare happened this week. I contracted the swine. It actually wasn't my worst nightmare though because Brian and Reid were spared. I holed up in our bedroom for a couple of days (wearing a mask whenever I came out and was around Reid) while Brian played Mr. Mom. I am so thankful for Brian! I don't know what I would have done without him last week. I was pretty useless. So now we're moving right along at the McFarland house...literally!

Here is some video of my 7 month old walking (or something) with his little walker. Check him out at the end...he's an all-terrain baby!

Autumn is in the air...

On Saturday we spent a lovely morning with the Stunkards at the Dallas Arboretum. They are having their autumn festival, and the already lovely gardens were decorated with tons of pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn. We couldn't have asked for better weather or better behaved babies!

Typical younger sibling/cousin..."I'm not touching you!"

Tasty!

Hair-pulling is a common offense at our house these days

He must get it from his dad...

Reid is always particularly chatty when he's in his high chair. Here's a tiny glimpse into his true personality :)
